Commemorating International Women’s Day

International Women's Day

Woman: a mother, a sister, a daughter, a wife, a force to be reckoned with. Throughout the world on the 8th of March, international women’s day is celebrated to honor the social, cultural, economic, and political achievements of women. But this tribute was not acknowledged until 1975 and 48 years down the road, this day is being advanced under the theme of Innovation and Technology for gender equality.

Women through the years had to battle for their basic rights such as the right to vote, gender inequality, and, violence and abuse, and yet they have emerged triumphed. Nonetheless, this needs to be addressed that through it all, the mental health of women has majorly been compromised, and have not been provided with a safe platform to discuss and openly share their respective journeys, feelings, and emotions.

Multi Tasking Women

It has been expected from women to bear the weight of being a constant provider of care and not seek time for themselves to promote calm and peace. The unfurling of times has in a way created progressive stressors that are not only physically draining but emotionally exhausting as well.

Through various media channels, literature, and other art forms, women have been portrayed as a weaker gender. A gender of sensitive turbulence that often cries when circumstances get hard and are incapacitated to manage their emotions well. Rather, the truth is far from different. Women, throughout the world, are born with the belief of marrying into other homes, live a life as the one from the other house, and accept the brunt of responsibilities of not only one but ironically two families, metaphorically, she is sailing on two boats.

Women Mental Health

The times are changing, and so are mental health conditions. While women have made significant progress in terms of rights and opportunities over the years, there is still a long way to go and it is the need of the hour to understand and appreciate what women are doing for society at large. As a community, it is our responsibility to promote both equity and equality in terms of all spheres of life and to strike the awaited balance between the two.

In the end, it can not be emphasized enough that above all, a calm mind will always yield better results, and no matter what, mental health shall be thought about, spoken about, and addressed about above all else. This women’s day, let’s recognize that we all have a role to play in creating a more just world for all. Together, we can choose to challenge stigmas, inequalities, and biases, and build a better future for everyone.
