World Mental Health Day

Every year on 10th October, throughout the world, Mental Health Day is celebrated to raise awareness and eradicate the stigma attached to it. Mental health is as important as physical health and requires as much attention as any physical disorder. This year the agenda for World Mental Health Day is :

"MENTAL HEALTH at WORK"

With the fast speed of life, all of us have forgotten how to pause and enjoy little things. Rushing from home to office and from office to home, it seems life is passing by in this back and forth. Often with tiresome agendas and fixed schedules, health in general takes a back seat and is neglected to the point where sometimes it becomes too late to catch on. This is where we make our gravest mistake.

I completely agree that life can not be compartmentalised in small sections but a view can be taken to prioritise our life where we do not abandon that which is most important. Taking care of our health should be our priority. The old sayings that promote “health being wealth” were not only true but also focused on something that we usually are not able to see. In the race of life, we prioritise money, we prioritise work, we prioritise people but where and when do we prioritise ourselves? The one who has to spend his entire life with himself.

Therefore, don’t you think it is crucial to work on something that has to pave through life till the very end with us; our mind, our body and our soul?

We keep on juggling between one responsibility to another, always focusing on the next best thing. We want the raise, we want the praise, the big office with all the space, where life is held on hold and duties are manifold, and when the end comes in shock, we wonder where did all the time go!

Work is crucial, very crucial in fact to keep us mobile in life work is what keeps us moving. It provides us with a sense of purpose and something to look forward to, but in the end, it is just a part of life; not the whole life. There may be many struggles that we may have to face, stigma, poor working conditions, stressful environments or even off-hours duty, but always remember that work though most important is not above our health, not above our peace and definitely not above our happiness and family.

Balance is required in every sphere of life and when it comes to work, balance is all that matters. Instead of pushing ourselves to the limit where we burn out, let’s focus on making healthier and wiser choices. Let’s be mindful of what we bring to the table and what we carry back home. Let’s be aware of where to draw the line.
